With growing evidence of the relationship between oral health and systemic health like diabetes, maternal health, and heart disease, dental professionals have an important role in chronic disease management. This webinar, in partnership with the National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA) will describe the relationship between oral health and chronic diseases. In addition, the webinar will describe strategies to implemental integration between oral health and primary care practice to help improve chronic disease outcomes, enhance care coordination, and increase utilization of dental, medical, and behavioral health services.

Objectives:

  • Learn the relationship between oral health and systemic health.
  • Describe the framework for integrating oral health and primary care practice.
  • Describe strategies to implement medical and dental integration initiatives in health centers.

Candace Hsu Owen, RDH, MS, MPH, Senior Director of Education & Strategic Partnerships, National Network for Oral Health Access

Candace Hsu Owen is a registered dental hygienist and the Senior Director of Education & Strategic Partnerships for National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA). She has a Master’s in Public Health and in Dental Hygiene. With NNOHA, she develops and provides training and technical assistance resources for oral health and medical providers in the safety net. Her areas of expertise include workforce optimization, oral health equity, enhancing access to care, oral health integration, and individuals experiencing barriers to care. Before joining NNOHA, Candace served as a faculty member for the University of New Mexico Department of Dental Medicine, teaching interprofessional education, clinical dental hygiene, and special care dentistry. Candace’s clinical dental hygiene experience includes community health care settings with patients experiencing homelessness and patients with developmental disabilities. Candace is a Board Member for the Social Mission Alliance, an organization that aims to promote health equity in health academia. Outside of NNOHA, she provides preventive dental services for patients in addiction recovery facilities and supportive housing centers. Candace lives in Denver with her husband, daughter, and two dogs.
