Event Overview
This session lays the foundation for understanding domestic violence (DV) and intimate partner violence (IPV) and their profound effects on health and well-being. Participants will explore the definitions of DV/IPV, common warning signs, and the impact on physical and mental health. The session will also introduce the importance of confidentiality when working with survivors and the role of healthcare providers in offering compassionate referrals to additional resources. By strengthening awareness and response strategies, healthcare professionals can play a critical role in supporting patient safety and well-being.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Define domestic violence (DV) and intimate partner violence (IPV) and understand their prevalence in healthcare settings.
- Recognize the short- and long-term health impacts of DV/IPV on physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.
- Identify key warning signs and risk factors that may indicate a patient is experiencing DV/IPV.
- Understand the importance of confidentiality when working with survivors and discussing sensitive topics.
- Discuss the role of healthcare providers in supporting survivors through nonjudgmental communication.
- Explore best practices for warm referrals to community resources, ensuring patient safety and access to support services.

Max Pierce is a dedicated Community Health Specialist at the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition, known for coordinating impactful trainings and collaboration efforts throughout Utah. With expertise in healthcare-based screening, digital abuse, trauma-informed care, and domestic violence awareness, Max empowers healthcare professionals to make a positive difference. Their multidisciplinary background in education, including work with public and private schools, and outdoor recreation programs, with emphasis on social change reflects his versatility and commitment to creating a safer society.
