Wasatch Homeless Health Care, Inc., Fourth Street Clinic, Salt Lake’s leading nonprofit healthcare provider for homeless Utahns is a Patient Centered Medical Home that operates with a staff of 50 and a volunteer network of more than 150. Annually, the clinic serves 5,000 homeless adults and children with 25,000 primary care, mental health, substance abuse, dental, specialty care and case management visits. Fourth Street Pharmacy dispenses 54,000 medications. By increasing homeless Utahns’ access to primary care, Fourth Street Clinic is a major partner in ending homelessness, promoting community health, and achieving across-the-board health care savings.

Summary of Position

The Fourth Street Clinic is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse interested in educating staff, patients and the community we serve. The Clinical Educator is responsible for the initial training and orientation of new clinic staff, ongoing education of current staff on clinical policies, processes and procedures, and the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system. This position will also be responsible for ongoing clinical training and annual skills reviews with clinic staff. The nurse will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and assessment skills necessary to communicate, educate, and provide a therapeutic and safe environment for specific age groups and populations served. They must be able to respect diversity of each individuals values, culture, spiritual beliefs, and other socio-economic issues in addressing the needs of patients, visitors and coworkers.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

In coordination with Fourth Street Clinic leadership and staff, the Nurse Clinical Educator uses the educational design process including planning, development, implementation and evaluation to bridge the knowledge, skills, and/or practice gaps as identified through a needs assessment.

• Supports the dissemination of new knowledge and the use of evidence to guide clinical practice, and improve patient care.

• Assist supervisor staff in evaluating candidate’s basic clinical skills during the interviewing process, including temporary employees, as requested.

• Provide education and training of clinical skills for new clinical staff, including checklists for clinical competency, policy reviews, and immunization training. Provide feedback to supervisors about new hires during and at the completion of training prior to the conclusion of the initial probationary period. • Coordinate orientation schedule in collaboration with their supervisor.

• Annual review of clinical skills for MAs and RNs, and provide supervisors, staff and Human Resources a copy of annual checkoffs.

• Evaluate staff members’ opportunities for improvement with particular issues and provide managers with feedback about employee ongoing training needs.

• Work with the Medical Director, Quality Improvement, Risk Management and supervisors to adjust/create training programs that address areas of concern. Implement those changes with new and existing staff.

• Arrange and present trainings for clinical staff including coordination with individual, team and all staff meetings.

• Arrange separate training with supervisors for staff who are unable to attend scheduled meetings.

• Coordinates scheduling, training process, and training programs for clinical externs.

• Works with community partners on training programs for externs.

• Serves as the clinical EHR superuser to provides EHR upgrade coaching and support.

• Develops and maintains an EHR training program in conjunction with Epic staff as needed.

• Provide education and practice scenarios in the EHR for staff based on the needs of the position (Medical Assistants, Nursing, Care Coordinators, Community Health Workers, and Providers).

• Completes all other tasks as assigned.

• Models behavioral standards that advance the inter professional practice, the learning environment, and the profession of nursing and healthcare qualification 

Required Skills or Abilities

• Excellent presentation skills

• Excellent knowledge of clinical processes and procedures

• Previous training experience helpful, including adult learning; ability to utilize different techniques for adult learning

• Excellent time management and organization skills

• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with partners and staff such as Epic staff, Network Specialist, new hires and others.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality

• Ability to work alone and without direct supervision

• Ability to travel between clinic sites including Nurse Care Manager, Mobile and Outreach Sites as needed.

• Excellent computer skills in MS Office, including Excel and Word Required Knowledge, Experience or Licensure/Registration

• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.

• 2 years clinical experience required. Previous experience in Family Practice or Outpatient setting preferred

• Previous EHR experience required. Experience with Epic EHR preferred.

• Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification required

• Certified as CPR Healthcare Provider instructor preferred or must be willing to obtain certification within 6 months.
