Overview: As the connection between exposure to trauma and long-term health conditions becomes clear, the health care sector is beginning to focus on how to best care for patients with a history of trauma. For many people, trauma may increase their risk of serious health issues leading to poor health outcomes and higher medical and social service costs. Health care providers can address patients’ traumatic experiences and their associated health effects by implementing trauma-informed approaches to care. Changing organizational culture and clinical practice to reflect trauma-informed principles has the potential to improve patient engagement, treatment adherence, health outcomes, and provider and staff wellness.

This event will provide:

1. A quick review of the basics of trauma and trauma-informed care
2. An explanation of SAMHSA’s ten implementation domains
3. Steps to create an implementation plan and form an implementation team
4. A variety of resources for implementation

SUPPLEMENTAL WORKGROUP OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE
When an organization makes a commitment to implement trauma-informed care, it is beginning a multi-year, multi-dimensional process of change. Given the long-term process of organizational implementation, after attending this event attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an ongoing peer-driven collaborative workgroup. This workgroup intends to provide a community to create a space for further instruction and accountability on implementation and shared learning about effective approaches and evidence-based resources. It will include lectures and guest speakers, based on participant requests and needs.

The workgroup is set to meet throughout the next year in November, January, March, May, and June. Additional workgroup information will be provided to during the Trauma-Informed Care: Implementation Framework training. Anticipated outcomes include:

1. Completion of an organizational self-assessment
2. Creation of an organizational trauma-informed care implementation plan
3. Access to a compilation of resources to provide further ongoing guidance to implementation

Who should participate:

  • At least two staff members from each organization
  • At least one member of senior leadership or management
